- Plug'n'play is only guaranteed to work where it isn't needed. All of the
- standard components in a PC are inherently nonconflicting, and I'm not just
- talking about parallel & serial ports, hard & floppy controllers... there are
- so many devices which you take for granted to the point where you don't
- realize that they even exist, such as the DMA controller, the interrupt
- controller, the timer, the keyboard controller, etc.
-
- The most common use for plug'n'pray (spelling intentional) is installing an
- internal modem, which used to require that you find the docs for your I/O card
- or figure out by trial and error how to disable one of the existing COM ports.
- Now that most I/O is implemented on the motherboard and controlled by BIOS
- setup options (for which you can't lose the docs detailing the jumper
- settings), I'd rather configure manually. In fact, this approach is an
- absolute necessity for the operating systems that don't like the idea of the
- BIOS reassigning interrupt and DMA channels every time the machine boots.
-
- I'm also not convinced that p'n'p can correct an I/O port conflict. Does
- anyone have direct experience with this?
-
- While other complications such as SCSI, network, sound, and CD-ROM interfaces
- which were relatively rare are becoming more common, p'n'p doesn't help you
- with older cards... and newer equipment reduces conflict anyway (e.g. ATAPI
- CD-ROM drives remove conflict by using a standard interface with which no
- other standard device conflicts).
